I have completed the first semester of my Senior Year and it went by so fast! It was pretty intense because I finally got into the education classes, but I love it! I'm excited to finally finish my schooling to go make a difference in my students' lives.
Some of you may wonder "Why Family and Consumer Science?" Well wonderers, first and foremost it is because I want to be a mom. That is my dream job. Always has been. It wasn't until I transferred to BYU that I realized I was probably going to have to get a degree in something. So when filling out the application I chose the most practical thing I could come up with and that was Family and Consumer Science... little did I know that it was an education major! Never in my life did I have the desire to be a teacher. That's what every other girl in town was going to do and I didn't want to go back to our crappy American education system. Sorry but standardized tests are not my forte and I didn't want to feel responsible for teaching core curriculum just so my students could pass a test! But this semester taught me something different. I learned that every student, especially those who are struggling to learn English, are bound by poverty, etc, need a teacher to help them get past the micro factors in their lives with a positive heart and hope for a better future. I read a short novel called "Breaking Through" by Fransisco Jimenez and his struggles and triumphs through school as he tried to support his family, all Mexican immigrants. He wanted to be a teacher despite his father saying that that profession was for the rich. Fransisco had the desire to break from the bonds of poverty and make something of himself. He loved to learn and it was the inspiration and help he received from several teachers throughout the years that helped him achieve his long-term goal and become better at speaking English because those teachers worked on his funds of knowledge. It is possible to get through to "trouble" students. They just need help to realize their potential... and I want to be the person to help kids do that.
Now, what is Family and Consumer Science, you may ask? It involves sewing, cooking, child and adolescent development, family finance, family processes and relations, interior design and the like. Cool, eh? I like that because it will help me be a versatile mother, or I can teach a variety of subjects depending on what is available in schools. So it's a win-win situation! :)
I am so glad to be done with finals! Alex and I have really gotten into the TV series 'Chuck' on Netflix and you can bet we will finish the last two seasons before the break is over!!! I'm really excited for Christmas because I'll get to be with my family for over 24 hours and my sweetheart will be there too! Our first Christmas. :) The rest of the break will be filled with work and naps that will hopefully carry us through Winter Semester.
Hooray for being a college student!!!
