The First Weekend

Friday evening I moved into my new apartment at BYU. I put my groceries away and made my bed while my dad talked to my roommate. My dad and I then went out to dinner at his favorite restaurant, Carrabbas (the only one in the state happens to be 5 minutes away from my house.) It was really nice just to talk to my dad and eat super delicious food, but I knew the time would come for him to drop me off and leave me in "Happy Valley." He hugged me goodbye, and said three words that you don't hear too often amongst my family, "I love you."

I held back tears as I walked to my new front door, knowing on the other side would be a slough of people watching a movie. (My roommate is often the host of movie nights, and I didn't want to have her cancel just because I was moving in a day earlier than she expected.) I walked in, said hi to my roommate and a random guy and went straight to my room. There, I took a deep breath, looked around, and finished unpacking. After I was done, however, it was only 9 o'clock and the movie still had another hour left. I came out of my cave and stood in the only open space for another human being in the living room. 21 bodies were crammed around the tv screen, it was quite the sight!

After being introduced to everyone I sat on the floor and guy came over to me. We ended up talking, getting to know each other for about an hour, even when everyone else had gone outside to play games. It was nice to get to know someone on my first day.

Saturday was New Student Orientation for transfer students in which I found someone to talk to, walk next to, and sit by, which was nice. The girl was from Georgia, is deaf in one ear, and had a Spanish accent from her mission she just got back from 3 weeks ago.

That night my apartment was invited to play night games, meeting in what they call "the fishbowl." In the neighboring apartment complex, the boys housing is on the left, and the girls on the right with all the windows facing inward, toward each other. If anyone goes in, everyone can see, just like a fishbowl. Haha! So, I went to night games. By myself. My two roommates stayed in to watch a movie, but I decided I needed to get myself out there in the efforts of making at least one friend.
I had a lot of fun, and met a lot of great people. They are the ones that remembered my name even the next day at church. :) After church was ward choir at 3, and once again, I pushed myself to get involved. Turns out, it's the best ward choir I've ever heard, especially for being the first practice, where we're all sight-reading the music! It was amazing!

Since one of my roommates has been here a year already, she took it upon herself to make dinner groups where people in the ward take turns making dinner for groups of 8 or 12 people, so you're surely to get fed each day. My other roommate and I went with her to every apartment in our ward, and got to meet everyone. There are SO MANY NAMES to remember... I'm pretty sure I was introduced to everyone like 3 times today, but still can't remember their names.
At 8 pm was a "munch and mingle" where I met yet more people, taking note of guys who are attractive and trying to remember their names. It wasn't until the prayer meeting afterward, though, that I ended up talking to some guys with three other girls and we were all invited for a group date this Saturday!!! WOOT! I've only been here 2 days and I already have a date. Only at BYU, right?
