The Mother Report

Monday after school, I stopped at home to pick up a recipe to make sugar cookies with my friend. My mom was sitting in her usual chair, wearing her usual blanket, and watching the tv (as usual.) I walked over to her and pulled a good wad of hair off her blanket and commented on how she still had hair on her head (the physician said it'd be gone by last weekend). She has been wearing hats since Friday to hide its thinness.
After coming home and teaching piano lessons, I looked at my mom and noticed her hair wasn't poking out from under her hat anymore. I asked if she'd shaved her hair off. "No, I just tucked it into my hat." Thinking she just wanted to keep the hair from falling all over the house, I accepted that answer.
Later, after dinner when my dad was home, I was clearing the table. I hear my dad ask my mom "So did you actually shave it off?" I turned around to see my mom staring at him, then she pulled off her hat to reveal a bald head. Rubbing it, she said it felt like Velcro. Jokingly, I asked "The soft side or the scratchy side?" She answered the soft side and I continued my cleaning job. The next time I looked at my mom, she had tears streaming down her face and she had put her hat back on. My dad was looking at her so lovingly, so tenderly, that he looked like he was on the verge of tears himself. Silently, with tears in my own eyes, I finished cleaning the kitchen.

For family night, it was my turn to conduct-- my turn to choose the song. Now, depending on who's conducting, we sing certain songs. For my little sister, we always sing '"Give" Said the Little Stream', my little brother always chooses 'Book of Mormon Stories', and I often decide on 'Families Can Be Together Forever'. You can guess which one I chose that night. My voice was shaky as I sang, and I tried to hide my teary eyes.

I LOVE MY FAMILY ♥
